Jeff, Superintendent for a construction group in Salem, OR, told Session 8B of Turbo’s Leadership Development Lab (LDL):
“I was making phone calls and doing some paperwork in my truck at our NW Kerby Street project. When I got out of the truck, closed the door to begin my walk back to our crew, I heard the unmistakable sound of our 18” cut off saw and noticed Nate was cutting a piece of PVC pipe. To my surprise, I saw that he wasn’t wearing his safety glasses. I quickly went back to my truck and grabbed a new pair of safety glasses still in their wrapper and Turbo’s DARE+ correction process card.
“I walked up to Nate, and said “Nate when I was coming back over this way, I noticed you were running the cut off saw without wearing your safety glasses, WHAT HAPPENED?” He said “I gave my glasses to Matt who is working down in the ditch.”
“I continued to follow the DARE formula and responded by saying “As you know, our standard is that you must wear your safety glasses any time you’re cutting anything with the cutoff saw. The reason this is SO important is because accidents can be avoided by taking just a few minutes to find your safety glasses and wearing them. I would never want to see you hurt your eyes. By following all of our company safety standards you can avoid debilitating injury of all kinds. Will you agree to wear your safety glasses and follow all of your other “PPE” standards in the future?”
“He said yes! And I said “I know that by adhering to our standards you are going to continue to be a huge asset to our company and you will continue to SEE all the things in life that are important to you.”
“The lesson I learned from this experience is when I see a safety infraction, I need to take action and carefully follow the 5 step DARE+ correction process every time. The DARE+ formula makes it easy to correct safety infractions without attacking my guys.
“The action I call you to take is to gain a full understanding of your company’s safety standards, know what the standards are and how they benefit your guys. When you see a safety standard violation, do not hesitate to use the DARE+ formula to correct the unacceptable behavior without making it personal.
“The benefit you will gain is the respect of your crews and you will help your company achieve the safety performance you can be proud of. You will grow in your professional treatment of each other every day. Your guys will see clearly why adhering to high standards is for everyone’s benefit.”
